Leading Linux software company Red Hat Inc. says it’s cutting through some of the complexity of today’s intricate hybrid cloud and on-premises computing environments with a new version of its flagship operating system that’s more accessible for developer teams who design and test new applications.
The company has announced the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers from today. It’s a somewhat streamlined edition of the popular RHEL platform that’s used by thousands of businesses globally, aimed specifically at business development teams who need to get up and running fast.
The idea is that these teams can quickly set up a free version of RHEL when they need to build, test and iterate on new applications that will later be deployed on the full RHEL platform that hosts their production systems across hybrid environments.
RHEL for Business Developers provides self-serve and no cost access to the complete platform for anyone who’s signed up to the Red Hat Developer Program. Each user can provision up to 25 physical, cloud-based or virtualized instances completely free of charge, enabling them to build and test new applications on exactly the same software on which they will later be deployed. The idea is that this will help to ensure consistency and reliability once those applications are moved into production, with no surprises that arise from software compatibility issues.
According to Red Hat, RHEL for Business Developers provides access to all of the latest tools, features and content found in the full, production version of RHEL, including the most popular open-source application programming languages, tools and databases in use today. Other features include open-source container tools such as Podman Desktop, which provides developers with the ability to create bootable container images for their applications that will run seamlessly on the full platform.
Gunnar Hellekson, vice president and general manager of RHEL at Red Hat, said the new edition also helps to reduce friction between developer teams and operations staff who are dealing with production versions of RHEL. “Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers helps empower developers with direct access to the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform without having to move through centralized IT channels,” he explained.
Red Hat said RHEL for Business Developers sits above the Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals, which is a free offering intended for personal use, and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Subscription for Teams, which is a paid offering for enterprises that includes additional proprietary development tools.
The company said users will be able to purchase various Red Hat Developer Support subscriptions alongside RHEL for Business Developers, ensuring they’ll be able to get professional help if they experience any problems.
