Gathering data can help organizations better understand customers and track performance. As you scale, how do you make sure your business-critical insights are processed efficiently?

From harnessing edge insights to speeding cross-team data delivery, organizations are counting on Red Hat technologies to help manage and analyze their valuable information. In this month’s customer success highlights, we’ll share how two media companies, Verizon and Globo, used Red Hat OpenShift to manage their data and stay ahead of the market.

AI-based edge insight with enterprise Kubernetes

Verizon and its division Verizon Media sought to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to help their developers use 5G data insight to build innovative new services. For example, large-scale AI inferencing — providing data evaluation after training — at Verizon’s network edge would support near real-time decision making.

Verizon and Verizon Media created Leo, an AI-based edge intelligence platform and application, to provide new data insight across a variety of use cases, from crew safety and touchless travel to video analytics, drone-based delivery, smart manufacturing, and more.

The company chose Red Hat OpenShift to support Leo’s continued development across Verizon’s cloud environments. Verizon successfully migrated more than 1,000 containers to the new platform from its previous solution.

By creating a more reliable, consistent developer experience, Verizon reports it has improved its time to market for new, innovative applications. With a modular, container-based foundation on Red Hat OpenShift, Verizon can accommodate the anticipated potential of 5G at the network edge. Its platforms can now process more than 1 million AI inferences per second. As a result, Verizon has improved prediction accuracy for thousands of edge appliances and endpoints.

Inspired by its shift to enterprise open source container technology, Verizon Media joined the Enterprise Neurosystem project, an AI and machine learning (ML) open source research community effort.

Data delivery, but make it agile

Globo is the largest media business in Latin America and one of the five largest media businesses in the world. Its digital subscription integration team works to communicate with other business units in the group and supports content delivery, with a focus on improving integration between the company’s different departments and with other Globo companies.

This team faced a complex database and file exchange environment with point-to-point integration. To reduce complexity, Globo sought to adopt a centralized application programming interface (API) and integration platform that could provide a core platform for governance of current and future integrations.

Globo selected Red Hat Fuse, deployed in Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated, to create its cloud-native integration environment. OpenShift Dedicated, the high-availability managed version of Red Hat OpenShift, is operated and supported on private clusters by Red Hat. Globo’s new solution is deployed in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“We needed an agile, robust solution to deliver rapid value for the business. Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated was perfect for our needs,” said André Vilardo, Systems Architect and Integration Leader at Globo.

Using Red Hat OpenShift to coordinate the flow of internal data — from programming grids and content rights to human resources and financial information — Globo can now transmit 85,000 messages per hour. More OpenShift nodes can be added to increase its CPU and memory capacity as more integrations and products are introduced.

Additionally, adoption of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) and agile approaches have helped Globo complete 50 new deployments per week to enhance its data processing capabilities.

To improve staff skills and take full advantage of its technology investment, Globo engaged a Red Hat Technical Account Manager (TAM). The Red Hat TAM also helped organize workshops and test development for Globo’s teams with Red Hat system integrators.
