As organizations think about IT modernization, they also have to consider the impact of new processes and technology on their partners, vendors, and customers. This month, we’ll highlight success stories from organizations in banking and telecommunications—dynamic industries that are facing rapidly changing customer demands. Let’s see how Banco Original and HKT built efficient, flexible IT foundations with Red Hat to better meet customer and market needs.

Banco Original counts on Red Hat OpenShift to meet new industry requirements

Banco Original is a private Brazilian financial institution with almost 5 million customers. It was the first bank in Brazil that allowed the opening of a checking account 100% through mobile devices.

In 2020, another Brazilian bank, the Central Bank of Brazil, introduced Pix, an instant payment network that lets individuals or companies make and receive payments in seconds using a mobile application or with an email address, cell phone number, QR code, or tax identification number.

Support for this new payment solution is mandatory for all Brazilian banks, like Banco Original, which was launched in 2016. Successful adoption of Pix requires transfers completed in 10 seconds or less, 24x7 availability, and compliance with national and industry security protocols. To meet these performance requirements, Banco Original sought to migrate its microservices from VMware virtual machines (VMs) running on industry-standard infrastructure to a more efficient, scalable solution.

After testing several VM solutions and completing several workshops with Red Hat, Banco Original decided to use the same solution chosen by the Central Bank of Brazil and expand its Red Hat OpenShift environment to support Pix. The bank has used Red Hat OpenShift since 2018 to host and manage its microservices with supported enterprise open source technology.

Just a short time after the introduction of Pix, Banco Original reports that it now supports eight times more users for the platform than the previous national digital payment solution—with traffic increasing almost 700% in five months. The bank has seen similarly rapid growth in its other services.

Banco Original runs this platform, comprising approximately 2,000 containers, on Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS. The bank also uses several other Red Hat solutions and services including Red Hat support for Spring Boot (part of Red Hat Runtimes), Red Hat Smart Management, and the Red Hat Learning Subscription.

HKT calls on Red Hat Consulting for OpenShift implementation

HKT is a leading telecommunications service provider and innovator in Hong Kong, providing a wide range of services including fixed-line, broadband, mobile, media entertainment, and enterprise solutions. The service provider needed to create a scalable, easy-to-use development environment to speed time to market and creation of software capabilities.

As a long-time user of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, HKT decided to use Red Hat OpenShift as the foundation of its new service development environment. After initially using Red Hat OpenShift to develop HKT’s Security Information and Events Management (SIEM) platform, the service provider expanded its Red Hat OpenShift environment to support new customer-facing service portals for travel, insurance, and e-commerce.

HKT’s team worked with Red Hat Consulting to install Red Hat OpenShift and establish a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) approach that ensured the new services were running in production in only a few months.

With agile processes and more effective resource allocation—such as faster provisioning than its previous virtual machine (VM)-based approach—HKT can now introduce new products and services faster than before: in one week, rather than four.

“In the past, we had to be careful with sizing and would build virtual machines to prepare, even if there was no traffic,” says Eric Wong, Senior Vice President of Business Technology Unit, HKT. “Red Hat OpenShift, paired with CI/CD and DevOps, helps our developers provision and use resources more efficiently to respond to customer needs.”

In addition to gaining scalability, Red Hat OpenShift has also helped the company simplify onboarding for new merchants. HKT reports it's now exploring other areas where Red Hat technology might provide performance and feature improvements.
