We understand that digital transformation isn’t just about technology — it’s also about the process and people. How will your team get trained? How do you implement new business models to execute more rapid development cycles? And how will modernization help employers meet the needs of their employees?

In this month’s customer success stories, see how Omnitracs, LLC and SaoBacDau Telecom also tapped into Red Hat’s consulting or training offerings to transform their IT teams. Our third success highlight, AvivaSA Emeklilik ve Hayat A.Ş. (AvivaSA), relied on Red Hat solutions in 2017 when Turkey’s government began requiring private-sector employers to automatically enroll employees into a pension plan. It counted on Red Hat once again recently to continue its IT modernization efforts. Read on for more.

Driving faster development with containerization and a DevSecOps approach

Omnitracs, LLC is a global pioneer of trucking solutions for many business models. Omnitracs delivers software-as-a-service-based solutions to help more than 14,000 customers in more than 70 countries.

To stay current with industry trends and deliver the next generation of fleet management solutions, Omnitracs sought to create a cloud-native, scalable mobile platform that would connect drivers, office staff, and customers and adopt more iterative, agile development approaches. Omnitracs selected Red Hat based on our reputation for providing supported, enterprise open source technology and expert guidance on modern work approaches.

Omnitracs One is Omnitrac’s new fleet management platform. As the foundation for the platform, Omnitracs worked with Red Hat Consulting to deploy Red Hat OpenShift running in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Omnitracs One currently supports more than 15,000 customer vehicles and manages 59 billion data transactions annually. By adopting Linux container technology and iterative development practices to create Omnitracs One, Omnitracs has built a scalable, reliable platform that streamlines management for fleets of all sizes — and can adapt to future needs for years to come.

Working with Red Hat Services, Omnitracs developed a comprehensive transformation strategy for its technology and development practices, including two eight-week residencies at Red Hat Open Innovation Labs. During these engagements, Omnitracs worked with Red Hat to begin its shift to modern tools and practices and to develop the architecture for the Omnitracs One platform. The company also purchased Red Hat Learning Subscription, an all-access training subscription that includes on-demand courses, videos, and more.

“Because of the tools and processes we’re using now, development problems that used to take us three or even six months to solve are being handled in days, so we can deliver new services and features faster,” said Kent Norton, Chief Technology Officer, Omnitracs. By combining robust enterprise technology from Red Hat with integrated DevSecOps teams and open practices, Omnitracs can now deliver new services — and solve issues — faster than before. Providing reliable cloud solutions to drive Vietnam’s digital transformation

Founded in 2016, SaoBacDau Telecom (SBD Tel) provides cloud-based services in Vietnam. The company aims to provide reliable, high-performance cloud infrastructure and services that its customers can use to develop citizen-facing services across industries, from banking to logistics to government.

To support digital transformation, SBD Tel decided to build its cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform on Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Ceph Storage. Red Hat OpenStack Platform lets SBD Tel virtualize resources from industry-standard hardware. It then organizes those resources into the cloud and manages them so SBD Tel customers can access what they need, when they need it.

Red Hat Ceph Storage delivers software-defined storage on a choice of industry-standard hardware. It provides an open, massively scalable storage solution for modern data pipelines and lets SBD Tel customers look at data analytics and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) workloads.

SBD Tel worked with Red Hat Professional Services for design and implementation. “We also used our Red Hat Learning Subscription to improve skills. Colleagues have completed many of the online courses and plan to take the exams to get required certification,” said Đoàn Dũng Chi, Chief Technology Officer of SaoBacDau Telecom.

To help bring further value to the Vietnamese enterprises, SBD Tel became a Red Hat Certified Cloud Service Provider (CCSP). CCSPs use Red Hat cloud, container management, storage, middleware, and operating system software to build environments for customers. The program allows SBD Tel to offer as-a-Service solutions using the Red Hat products already in use in its datacenters. Read more about SBD Tel’s collaboration with Red Hat in the case study.

Expanding a Red Hat environment to prepare for an innovative future

AvivaSA Emeklilik ve Hayat A.Ş. (AvivaSA), a provider of private pension and life insurance services, distributes services through several channels, including direct sales, corporate and branch locations, phone, web, and mobile. Recently, AvivaSA decided to continue its IT modernization efforts by migrating from its service-oriented architecture (SOA) to a microservices- and container-based architecture, supported by an on-premise cloud strategy. AvivaSA turned to Red Hat for a supported, open source container platform that took advantage of the rapid innovation and troubleshooting of the community while providing the required reliability.

AvivaSA worked closely with Red Hat to design, build, and test OpenShift in an on-premise, virtualized environment. With assistance from its operations partner SabancıDX, the financial services company migrated four critical business systems to the new environment over six months. The company also migrated applications used by its partner Akbank and used for AvivaSA’s internal operations. After the completion of its IT Modernization Program, AvivaSA now processes close to 40% of its critical transactions—around 5 million transactions per day—with systems running on OpenShift and other Red Hat technologies.

Previously, creating new development environments took AvivaSA three to four days. With OpenShift, that same provisioning work can be completed in just three hours. Dynamic management built into OpenShift helps AvivaSA extend the reliability of its existing Red Hat architecture to its new, container-based environment. Migrating critical core applications to OpenShift on-premise has also helped AvivaSA be prepared if the Turkish government allows the use of cloud computing environments in the future.
