Accelerating research with HPC

Ghent University is in charge of developing the cloud component for the Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum (VSC), as part of a Supercomputing-as-a-Service offering for researchers in Belgium’s Flemish region.

Ghent University decided to use Red Hat OpenStack Platform as the cloud platform foundation of VSC. Red Hat OpenStack Platform abstracts industry-standard hardware infrastructure and organizes it into cloud-like architecture for more agile, efficient IT operations and easier management across traditional and cloud-native applications. 

The university also adopted Red Hat Ceph Storage, a distributed object storage platform, to provide massively scalable storage for data analytics and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). Tightly integrated with Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Red Hat Ceph Storage can scale to support petabytes of data.

“We didn’t want just upfront consultancy work but someone to support us every step of the way. Some of the alternative vendors we considered lacked a clear vision, but Red Hat’s commitment, roadmap, and level of support were clear,” said Stijn De Weirdt, Technical Coordinator of HPC, Ghent University.

Cutting decision processing time with DevOps approaches

At Kommunal Landspensjonskasse (KLP), Norway’s largest pension company, processing pension applications required complex manual tasks, making case management a time-consuming effort. 

To accelerate its pension processes, make them more user-friendly, and stay competitive against new digital-centric providers, KLP’s life and pension division began a five-year change program. Working with professional services company Accenture, KLP decided to automate its manual processes and adopt a DevOps approach, supported by a microservices-based IT architecture.

KLP and Accenture decided to deploy Red Hat OpenShift as the foundation of the new pension process architecture. The company now operates and manages Red Hat OpenShift running on Microsoft Azure for KLP—including developing custom Java microservices.

With a flexible, responsive IT foundation from Red Hat OpenShift, KLP can rapidly add teams to different projects to create and customize features and quickly deliver them to production.

“Provisioning environments manually requires a lot of time-consuming script and code creation,” said Tonny Gundersen, Managing Director, Cloud First, Accenture. “Red Hat OpenShift makes it easier to support DevOps teams with the right tools and environments.”

Advancing as-a-Service offerings with a container-based platform

T-2 is one of Slovenia’s largest telecommunications providers to individuals and businesses, operating network infrastructure in major cities across the country. To respond to digital market opportunities, T-2 is building new services to become an industry platform provider of container, edge and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions to businesses and governments. 

Containers illustration Working with Softergee, a Red Hat partner and regional IT service provider, T-2 decided to build its new digital services infrastructure using enterprise open source technology from Red Hat.

T-2 uses Red Hat OpenShift to extend its IT infrastructure to the network edge, including gateways and other data-gathering services close to data sources. Now, T-2 can collect and process massive volumes of data from multiple sources. With a container-based IT platform, T-2 can create advanced as-a-Service offerings and potentially enter new markets.

Additionally, Red Hat OpenStack Platform provides T-2 a modular foundation for compute, storage, and networks across existing traditional applications and cloud-native development and deployment. Integrated closely with OpenStack, Red Hat Ceph Storage supports instant virtual machine (VM) provisioning to support the petabytes and more of data generated by emerging workloads like edge. 

“By extending our public cloud solutions, with data processed on edge-deployed Red Hat OpenShift, our customers can use cloud resources in multiple regions through a unified interface, including geographical resource allocation in line with their edge strategies,” said Vladimir Smrekar, Head of IT System Integration, T-2.
